Art Isn't Easy

Sun Mar 15, 2009, 2:27 PM
I have been trying for the past two weeks to do a drawing of someone.

Why have I been trying for the past two weeks? Because I can't get the eyes right.

You see, the subject of this drawing has very interesting eyes. They're a mahogany colour and look very calm, comforting yet piercing.

I've tried colored pencils, ink, graphite, charcol, all failing epically.

So, yesterday, I sat down in my bedroom, put the 2006 London recording of "Sunday in the Park With George" (that's what the quote is from) in my CD player and started drawing. After some frequent erasing, four-and-a-half hours later, I had the face done on the drawing.

I still feel as though I'm doing no justice to the person in the drawing. Maybe I should have the person in front of me when drawing. I'm doing this from memory, after all.

Hmm, as I browse the pictures about your gallery I have 2 suggestions to make, these are only if you really want help improving and if not stop reading now.

You seem to have some difficulty with anatomy, I would suggest drawing people you see, that way you can see how poses and such go with various body types. If I where you I would focus on head shape most of all right now Mind you this is a common issue and most people here on Deviant art have it, me included.

You should also look for some color theroy tutorials, it seems like most times your pallet is erratic and it could really bring out your pictures more if you got more knowledge of the color spectrum. This too is a very very common problem with most anyone.

My main suggestion for you is to First draw a backround, then seperatly draw the cartoon person with the knowledge you gained from studying the surrounding people's anatomy, Then color it. with the new knowledge of color theroy.

One more thing, try using a program like Photoshop which has layers in it, to trace your pictures so they don't have that scribbly feeling to it. (It happends to anything colored in pencil)

I hope you can appreciate these comments.

I unfortunately do not have Photoshop and no one in my family is willing to pay $300.00 for software.

On the subject of color theory, I'll check the Blick store.

Also, are you suggesting that I get someone to sit for me for a drawing? Because I do admit, my better artwork is when I take a picture and draw it.
:iconi-am-unoriginal:
No no no, they don't have to model for you, but you should maybe sit down in a cofee shop or something and just daw some people you see... most of them stay for hours so it shouldn't be a problem.
:iconlonebassist:
You mean I should leave my house? At least there's a Starbucks. That should work.

oh and as for PS.. there are demos of it... and *cough* less legal ways BUT I DO NOT CONDONE STEALING SOFTWARE

*cough cough*
